We all like to feed our birds diverse and complete diets. Problem is, caged bird diets are lacking in most of the things our birds need in order to cure common conditions. Feeling “off” usually results in a mysterious fluffed bird. Most commonly, these digestive issues, infections, worm
In the wild, all animals will “self medicate” to cure illnesses, or to prevent things such as upset digestion, fungal or bacterial infections or to heal wounds. Caged birds only have the opportunity to consume or “forage” what we offer them. This diet is often lacking in vital nutrients and almost always lacks medicinal herbs they use to rid their systems of many common ailments.

HOW TO SERVE: Offer the herb salad in a separate dish. If your bird has a tendency to throw food, I recommend something like a “seed corral” or deep dish to prevent spillage. The bird will enjoy foraging and picking through the mix. They will eat the herbs they need for well being each day. 1-2 times per week, I dump the remaining herbs into their seed bowl or mix in with one of their soft food mashes. Then I refill the bowl. If your bird is interested in only a couple of herbs for a few days to cure something that ails him/her, it is important to offer them consistently, hence the bowl freshening once or twice a week.
